The issue of globalization and its impact on world citizens has become one of the most debated topics of the 21st century. Proponents of globalization tout this movement as a modern catalyst that drives economic, social and political advancement for countries that respond to the call to integrate world economies. Critics argue that, though globalization may have some benefits, these benefits are not transferred equally to all members of society. They further affirm that globalization serves the interests of the elite and negatively impacts historically disadvantaged members of society.
In the past, debates over globalization and its impact have typically occurred among members of society responsible for changes to socio-economic policy and those citizens who took exception to these modifications. Today, however, this debate has increasingly become main stream and ordinary citizens are being forced to take sides. Specifically, parents, students and educators are often encouraged to take a stance on globalization. Supporters of globalization urge them to choose an education system that teaches students the skills needed to serve as members of the global work force, whereas critics of globalization urge them to favor an education system that places emphasis on social literacy and democracy. The choices made by educators, parents and students in this regard will significantly influence the future of the public education system and, in the process, redefine society.

Thanks Laurel for opening up this safe space where voices can be heard. I strongly uphold to the tenets of the critics of globalization with emphasis on democracy. Based on the notion that it takes a village to raise a child, it is everyone's responsibility in the community to build individuals within the society to their full potential. The creation of this site is a step in the right direction towards the achievement of this goal. Let us all come together, share our ideas, and improve on the future of teaching and learning-the core business of schooling.
ReplyDeleteThank you Vera. We need all voices to be heard.
ReplyDeleteLaurelle I am extremely grateful for your initiation of this issue and other issues like it. The mind can be a beautiful and powerful asset due to its ability to adapt and flourish under the most challenging situations. I am passionate about Special Education and believe Special Ed. should be introduced to Dominica's education system because it is relevant and important to every Dominican child. In the US there is a program called "No Child Left Behind", this make me wonder about the children of Dominica and how many of them have been left behind due to their special needs. I currently work in Higher education, and have seen first hand how a child’s mind can transform with the aide of trained instructors.
ReplyDeleteI remember all the children in my classes in Marigot who were ostracized by society because they were perceived to be mentally challenged without proper diagnoses. In the United States, students like the ones in Marigot flourishes with the aid of well trained educators. Of course I am in no way comparing the United States with Dominica; however, I strongly believe that the lack of training for teachers and educators give rise to the notion that our children are not our priority; therefore, they are not our future.
My two Cents…
